PRESERVING LIFE BY ACTS OF MERCY

The most famous of the immediate precursors of Henry Dunant are the English nurse Florence Nightingale and the Russian surgeon Nikolai Pirogov, both of whom cared for the wounded on the battlefields of the Crimean War (1853-56), and the American Clara Barton who tended the casualties of the Civil War (1861-65).
