THE FIRST WORLD WAR AND PRISONERS OF WAR(1914-1918)

The Red Cross underwent an enormous development during the First World War. In particular, the Movement concerned itself with prisoners of war, a category of victims not previously protected by the Geneva Conventions. This index of seven million file cards, created in Geneva by the International Prisoner of War Agency, documents some two million prisoners held in the camps of the 38 belligerents.
